What is Occupational Therapy?

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying 'I will try again tomorrow.'

At Helping Kids Shine we typically work with children, young people and their families by helping them to address any difficulties that they may be experiencing in day to day life, with a focus on supporting their independence and wellbeing at home, in education and in the community.

Not many people have heard of Occupational Therapy, so quite often a friend, professional, or someone else, may tell you that you need to seek out Occupational Therapy for your young person, but may not be able to explain what an Occupational Therapist can help with specifically.

Occupational Therapists can work with anyone of any age.  After their training, Occupational Therapists tend to specialise, choosing to work in a particular area (e.g. hospital, community, school), with particular health needs, or with a particular age group.

At Helping Kids Shine we specialise in working with children, young people, and families from 0 to 25.  Our Occupational Therapists are able to support with self-care skills, play and leisure skills, home life skills, educational skills, community skills, etc.  Support provided may include supporting task specific learning, Ayres Sensory Integration, provision of specific therapy programmes to focus on skills such as handwriting or emotional regulation, recommendations for assistive equipment, recommendations for adaptations, moving and handling advice, etc.

In summary, there are lots of areas that we can cover, and this can make the role of an Occupational Therapist a little more confusing as we also cross over a little with Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and Educational Psychology!

“Occupational therapy helps you live your best life at home, at work – and everywhere else. It’s about being able to do the things you want and have to do. That could mean helping you overcome challenges learning at school, going to work, playing sport or simply doing the dishes. Everything is focused on increasing independence and wellbeing.

It’s also a science-based, health and social care profession that’s regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council.
